MOST IMPROVED TRACK – TOLMER SPEEDWAY

There’s venue renovations, and then there’s total transformations, and Bordertown South Australia’s Tolmer Speedway has undergone a major facelift to become the most talked about speedway venue in the nation. The project began with securing digital scans of the much loved I55 Speedway in Pevely Missouri to replicate on the existing Bordertown site, before dismantling the old track, including removing catch fences, concrete walls, and the scorers’ box to improve safety and functionality. Engineers redesigned the track, requiring 150,000 cubic meters of dirt to reshape the surface, before adding new concrete walls, catch fences, and VAILO LED lights alongside electronic flags and a modern PA system for better race management and fan communication.

The redevelopment was funded through a combination of a $1 million government grant and $2 million in in-kind donations from the local community, with volunteers contributing their time and skills. The project faced challenges, especially securing funding and starting the rebuild. However, the involvement of young volunteers has been a key aspect, ensuring the next generation is invested in the sport’s future.
